Samal Island

When it's time on the beach that visitors to Davao City Philippines have in mind, a trip to Samal Island or the Island Garden City of Samal is sure to please. 


The Municipality of Samal derived its name from the Isamals who were its first inhabitants. The Isamals were brought by the first and second waves of migration from the Malay Region of Southeast Asia, dynastically ruled by a Datu up to the early part of the American Regime. The latest ruling tribal Chieftain was Datu Taganiog who died on January 28, 1948. Discovery revealed that the latter lived at "Malibasa" (now known as Peñaplata, the poblacion) where he exercised his general supervision. The word "Malibasa" meant honorable. The Isamals lived in perfect harmony as peace-loving people.

The island offers world class choices of unspoiled beaches and niches which are ideal refuge to escape the hectic and fast paced urban life.


How to get to IGACOS
If you are coming Luzon, you have to get first to Davao City as it is the main entry point to Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS).

There are 4 options/entry points to Samal Island. 
  1. Take a 30 to 45- minute motorized banca ride going to Kaputian or Talicud Island, from Sta. Ana Wharf, which is adjacent to the Magsaysay Park - Davao City. 
  2. You can proceed to Sasa Wharf Km. 11 going to Babak by 10-minute motorboat cruise.
  3. 3. You may also proceed to the Island City Express Bus satellite terminal infront of Magsaysay Park to take the bus and the almost 15-minute barge ride from the ferry boat landing in Sasa, Km.11.
  4. The last option is thru the private motorboats which you can charter from Pearl Farm Wharf, Waterfront Wharf, Petron Wharf, Sta. Ana Wharf or the Lanang Beach Club Wharf.

Tourist Destination

Monfort Bat Sanctuary
The Monfort Bat Sanctuary is home to 1.8 million Geoffroy’s Rousette fruit bats (Rousettus amplexicaudatus) – the largest known colony of the species in the world. The bats all live in a single cave – guests aren’t allowed to enter, but they can peer over bamboo railings into any of five openings where the seething masses of sleeping fruit bats can be seen coating the cave walls.

The Monfort bat sanctuary is located in Barangay Tambo in Babak District on the “Island Garden City of Samal”
